During the war of 1812, Leesburg was chosen as the secret hiding place for the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution and other famous documents. In 1823, President James Monroe with the assistance of John Quincy Adams wrote the famed Monroe Doctrine in nearby Oak Hill documenting American imperialistic foreign policy. On September 14, 2008, the town of Leesburg celebrated its 250th birthday. During that celebration, the town unveiled its new flag.

Today, Leesburg is the seat of government for Loudoun County, one of America’s fastest growing counties. Despite the town’s population boom to and estimated 40,0000 residents over the past decade, old town Leesburg’s colonial charm and historical significance has not been compromised by suburban housing development sprawl.
